If you are new to the world of dog ownership, a trip to the local pet store can be an overwhelming experience. Pet stores have as many gadgets and “necessary” supplies as the average baby store – and the percentage of items that are actually useful is about the same at both stores. A dog needs food, water, a place to sleep, a few toys (which may come from around your home, whether that was your intention or not), a collar, a periodic bath, and lots of love. Most of the other stuff is fluff, more for the dog owner than the dog.

It is also important to remember that each dog is entirely unique. What worked for your other dogs may not work for this one, and some trial and error may be involved when buying any dog supplies.

This is especially true when it comes to dog grooming products. Dog grooming not only takes up an entire aisle at a pet store, but it has become an industry all its own. Professional dog groomers abound for owners that are not able or willing to tame their dog’s mane. If you are planning on grooming your own dog or just want some basic supplies for the time in between haircuts, here are some tips on choosing your arsenal of supplies.

The Basic Dog Grooming Supplies

The amount and type of dog grooming supplies you buy for your dog depends entirely on your best friend. You need to take into consideration their coat, how dirty they tend to get, and how long they are willing to sit still.

Dogs with very short hair will generally require only an occasional bath and perhaps a good rub more frequently to help them shed loose hair while they are outside, far away from your new couch.

Dogs with medium length hair will probably need occasional brushing and more frequent baths. Long haired dogs require very frequent brushing, sometimes daily depending on their coat, in order to avoid matting. They may also require more specialized bath products, even including conditioner to ward off tangles.

It’s Bath Time!

When you are choosing bath products for your dog, try your best to opt for natural products. Some dog shampoos and conditioners have an abundance of chemicals. As a general rule of thumb, if you would not put these ingredients on your scalp, you should not dose your dog in them either.

If you have a longer haired dog, a shampoo made especially for them may help to keep their coat looking clean and glossy. Using conditioner is also a good idea, as it will help to keep knots out of their coat and protect their hair during frequent brushing. Just be sure to thoroughly rinse the conditioner from their fur so that it does not build up and cause their coat to appear greasy.

Brushing Your Dog

There are a large number of dog brushes available to the canine owner. You should pick one that is ideal for your dog’s fur length, coarseness, and style. If your dog has especially coarse hair, a brush with metal bristles may be helpful. For other dogs, look for plastic or natural bristles that will flex when they hit skin. If your budget allows, picking brushes with natural boar bristles will help keep the coat shiny without any chance of irritating your dog’s skin.

The Dog Grooming Extras

While you can make do with just the essentials, it is a good idea to keep a few other dog grooming supplies on hand for emergencies. The top among these include flea and tick shampoo. If these pests do show up on your dog, it is essential to eliminate them as soon as possible to avoid illness, as well as the infestation of your home. For the squeamish, a brush that is specially made to comb through a dog’s hair and look for ticks or fleas may also be helpful. It is also helpful to keep on hand a shampoo specially made to eliminate strong pet odors, such as skunk spray or other nasty messes.

Finally, if your dog has nails that grow quickly, a set of dog nail clippers can save your furniture and floors from damage. Follow all instructions and be careful not to clip too much of the nail, as you can damage the quick (the pink part of the nail), which will cause bleeding and pain to your dog.

Grooming can be made into a time of happiness, where you spend quality time with your dog and show her your affection and love. Start with the appropriate dog grooming supplies, and you will have a beautiful and happy dog in no time.

Puppies are huge commitments. Investing in a puppy is almost like deciding to have a child. They require education, food, love, potty-training and much more. One thing a future dog master should consider is sending their pup to dog obedience training . This will save you from years of chewed up couch cushions, cleaning up accidents on the living room carpet, and most of all stress. Dogs are not meant to stress you out, they should make you happy. Also, be sure to consider expenses such as grooming, boarding or dog sitting and other care your pet will need. Similar to expecting parents preparing when having a baby, dog owners need to be prepared for their first puppy.

The first common quirk for a puppy to have is to use, and perhaps destroy your furniture. There are a few ways to alleviate this issue. However, if youfail to take care of this in the puppy’s early years it will become a force of habit for them. You may end up replacing pillows for the next fifteen years. One thing that will keep the dog off is a shock mat. These mats are portable and are battery powered. It will send an electrical impulse into anything that comes in contact with it. You simply turn it off when you want to sit on the piece and turn it on afterwards. These mats will save you money and help you and your dog be happier together.

Another bad habit your new puppy will have is to eat out of your trash bins! This is a problem a lot of adult dogs just never grow out of. One thing you can do, especially if you followed the last piece of advice, is place one of the shock mats in the way of your garbage bin. This will train your dog not to go near the garbage, and over time you won’t need the mat anymore. Another quick solution is to child lock your garbage bins. This may be a hassle, but you have to make small sacrifices for your dog.

In addition, your dog may make it his thing to jump on people. This really makes having company over hard, because they get berated by your dog. To fix this, it takes persistence. First, when your dog jumps up, grab their front paws and step on their back paw. It won’t cause them real pain, so don’t worry, its simply negative reinforcement. It teaches them that when they jump, something uncomfortable comes with it. By doing this every time and reprimanding, your dog will break this habit fast.

Dogs are very needy pets, and worth-it in comparison to the great friendship and memories a dog brings. Instilling good habits during their younger years is important. You have to teach the dog the difference between what is right and what is wrong, just as you would teach a child. If you fail to do so, your dog will develop a twisted perception of reality and bad habits.

There you are with your brand new pure bred puppy. Squeaking and bouncing around, happy as can be. You are standing there asking yourself a very important question. There are many questions that you may ask yourself when choosing the right dog food. Some dogs are sensitive to certain dog foods. They may be allergic to some as well. It all depends. You may want to find out which one the mother ate while pregnant and nursing the puppies. There are all kinds of concerns to consider. You may ask your veterinarian for their recommendation.

The best thing to do to reassure yourself that you are providing your dog with the best food possible, is to research it for yourself. This article will give you precautions to watch for when feeding your beloved new friend.

Did you know that regular bagged and canned dog food is actually made out of decaying, diseased and even dead animals. Not to mention when it states that there is wheat or rice in the mix, that is molded and mildewed laden and condemned by the FDA. Yes, that is what they make the dog food with. Sound yummy? With this in mind there is one known bagged and canned dog food that is actually all natural. That being Iams brand.

Then if the food says ‘all natural’, it should be okay. Now if you notice that it says that the food is made of bi products, those bi products include beaks, lungs, hooves, brains and other appetizing things. Can you imagine your beloved pooch eating that? I didn’t think so.

Also keep in mind when there are some certain sicknesses, they can’t have certain ingredients such as a diabetic dog. Dogs that have diabetes cannot have omega 3 oils. Really the best type of dog food that you can provide would be the kind that you make yourself or buy that is all natural. There are plenty of places online where you can order all natural dog foods. There are also plenty of places where you can find good recipes for your puppy to make his own food.

Some good wholesome foods that would be good to mix in the food would be yogurt. yogurt is good for the skin and coat. Grains,
barley, oatmeal and rice are all good for your puppy. You will want to rotate them. Prepare his food the same way that you would your own minus all of the seasonings. Other foods such as lamb, buffalo, duck and a variety of vegetables are really the best foods to feed your puppy. You can rotate the foods and your puppy’s life could be prolonged with feeding them the proper diet.

Other foods that are good for your puppy and may even be necessary because of it’s health issues. That definitely being organic foods. There are recipes and means to purchase these online as well. You may also need to find supplements to make up the necessary nutrients.

Although there is the convenience of purchasing bagged dog food, the ingredients should definitely be of a concern. For instance there was a recall on dog food back in August of 2007. Red Flannel Large Breed Adult Formula Brand dry dog food was recalled and many of the pets that ate it became sick. There were also other dog foods that were contaminated as well. There are other contaminates that can be found in dog foods at any time.

These may include salmonella poisoning or even rat poisoning. These two contaminates can surely harm if not kill your puppy. Kidney failure is one concern when a puppy eats rat poison laden dog food. That is just one example.

If there was a choice in dog food, whether it be dry or canned, most can agree that just about all of them are risky and just not that appetizing. If your pooch is a part of your family, surely you would want them to eat the best possible. There are many ways to prepare the proper food and there are even recipes for homemade dog treats and snacks. Foods that are high in carbohydrates and proteins are really good for your puppy. Don’t forget about the preservatives and colors that are not good for your dog as well.

The best thing to do is ask your veterinarian about the best type of dog food. There are bagged brands that you may consider. These are all natural and they even say that they are all natural. You may find these at the veterinarians office, online or even in pet stores. However, they may cost more then regular dog food, so that is something that you may want to consider when searching for the best dog food. You can find meats that are trimmings at butchers.

Surely they wouldn’t charge too much. Keep in mind that grease is not the best thing to feed your dog, either. It does the same thing to him as it would for us. Dogs need protein and fats though. Searching online, you can always find the best quality in all natural. The choice is yours. Choose wisely, your dog’s health depends on it.

After the massive pet food recall of 2007, many Dog Owner’s are wondering whether it’s safe to go back to the recalled brands their pets know and love. All three lines of Nutro dog food were affected by the recall. The containments have been identified and eliminated from entering the pet food chain, until maybe the next recall. But considering how long Nutro dog food has been around, they have had far more satisfied customers than unsatisfied ones.

About The Company

Nutro dog food and cat food started in the mind of a British entrepreneur who started his own line of pet foods in the 1920’s. The inevitable then happened – he was bought out by an American in 1926. John Saleen named the company Nutro and headquartered it in California. While selling the pet food available, the Saleen family put the profits into research and development.

One of the first companies to get on the “best nutrition” bandwagon in the mid-1980’s, Nutro dog food emphasized proper food ingredients like chicken and rice rather than the hodgepodge of slaughterhouse scraps and preservatives dog food mainly consisted of. In fact, there was even a dog condition known by vets as “dog food disease” where dogs that lived on only cheap dog food became horribly malnourished.

Would I Feed It To My Dog?

This writer has fed dry Nutro Science Diet Dog Food and biscuits to her own dog, who means more to me than life itself. I want her to eat much better than I do because I want her to live as long and pain-free as possible. Nutro dog food also comes in cans, but I haven’t tried them yet. The reaction from my dog was “good, but not back flip-worthy good”. She never got sick.

You do have to pay more than average for Nutro dog food. However, they often give out coupons for free bags and other deep discounts. They usually have free samples and sales representatives in big chain pet stores to talk to you about pet nutrition, if you so desire.

Although my Healthy Dog was not overly excited by Nutro dog food, I have no hesitation about feeding it to her again, even if she won’t do a back flip for it like she will attempt for other kinds of food (like Nutro’s pouch food for cats, which she is forbidden). Just like junk food, it tends to satisfy cravings that have nothing to do with proper nutrition. Feeding Alpo is like feeding McDonald’s – while Nutro dog food is like feeding a well balanced diet.

Puppies require continual nutritional support in order to maintain a healthy growing body. To keep up with their needs they should have food available to them throughout the day.

There are three popular methods for feeding your new puppy.

Mealtime Feeding

Portion-Control Feeding

Free Feeding

Mealtime Feeding - This methods is idea for young puppies who are being housetrained. This technique usually involves mixing solid food and canned food. Your puppy gets her meals at different times throughout the day. Most dog owners prefer to feed their puppies three meals a day, but there are some people who opt for four meals a day.

It doesn’t really matter if you are feeding your puppy three or four meals a day. The key is to remember to divide their food in equal portions across your chosen number of feedings. It is also more convenient if you schedule the feedings so you do not have to wake up during the night to feed your hungry puppy.

If you choose to feed her three times per day then every eight hours is a good schedule. If you decide on four meals a day then feed her every six hours instead. Keep in mind, however, that you should not reduce your puppy to two meals per day until she is at least five or six months old.

So what is the proper amount of food to feed a puppy?

Portion-Control Feeding - This is probably the most common method of feeding your puppy used today. This is especially helpful for those people who need to work during the day, leaving their puppy home alone.

In this method, you calculate how much food your puppy needs depending on her age, and type of breed. This amount of food is left in her bowl at the same time everyday, usually in the morning before you go to work. Remember to adjust the amount of food you are giving your puppy as she gets older.

By using this method your puppy will be able to nibble on food throughout the day as she gets hungry. Most puppies will only eat a small amount of food at a time. Some puppies will empty their bowls all at one time. However, studies have shown that puppies raised using this feeding method are less likely to overeat when they mature into adult dogs.

If you are having trouble house training your puppy then this method will probably not work for you and is best avoided.

Free Feeding - In this method you make sure that there is always food available in your puppy’s bowl. She is then allowed to nibble on it throughout the day whenever she likes.

This is of course the easiest method to follow since you just make sure you keep filling her bowl. However, it is the method least recommended by vets and breeders. Using this method to feed your puppy makes it harder to housebreak her since you are never really sure when she eats. You also do not have a good idea of how much she is actually eating on a daily basis.
