When buying a new puppy it is important to think carefully about where you buy it from. Owners of puppies who have not been purchased from a reputable source are often left to deal with numerous dog health care problems. This is because of the risk that you might unknowingly buy a puppy from a puppy farm.
Dog health care is a long way down the list of priorities for puppy farms and their proprietors. Indeed, farmed puppies are rarely healthy. Such puppies often suffer with grave physical and psychological illness.Farmed puppies are likely to demonstrate behavioural problems.
Such problems are caused by the situation in which these puppies are kept.Because puppy farms are just breeding facilities with profit as the only concern, the dogs are kept in poor conditions. The dogs have almost no contact with humans and are not able to move around or exercise.
The health of the dogs is neglected. Mother dogs are malnourished because of the poor quality food they are fed in only the smallest amounts. Females are forced to breed as often as they physically can from the age of four months onwards, only being allowed to stop when they die or become too ill.Such frequent breeding leaves mothers and puppies unhealthy. Mothers and puppies are normally separated too soon so that the babies can be sold and she can breed again. And this coupled with lack of human interaction causes behavioural problems and dog health care problems.
Puppies which are bought from pet shops are almost certainly the product of puppy farms, so it is not advisable to buy a puppy in a shop.Internet and newspaper adverts are also risky. This is why anybody considering buying a puppy from an advert should insist on seeing the puppies with their mother and even the father if possible. If excuses are made, the seller shouldn’t be trusted. Although farm puppies may be tempted because they may be cheaper than others, the vet bills and long term heart break outweigh the small saving. Ask dog owning friends and family for breeder recommendations instead of buying a farmed puppy.
