Dogs need exercise, and the activity they love more than any other is walking. However, many dog owners shirk the responsibility. Perhaps they simply don’t have time, or maybe they don’t realize how important it is to walk their dogs.
Others try, but give up in frustration because the dog “plays up” every time he’s on the leash. If this describes you, then listen up, because I’m about to tell you one of the most important things you need to know as a dog owner.
“Dogs must be walked!”
Most dog trainers recommend at least 30 to 45 minutes of exercise a day for healthy, adult dogs (more, sometimes much more, for certain breeds). And walking should form the cornerstone of that exercise regime.
But dog walking is more than simply clipping on the dog’s lead and heading out the door. A few simple guidelines will make it an altogether more enjoyable experience, for you and the dog.
Here are some best practices you can follow;
* Walk when its cool, rather than in the middle of the day. If however you do walk in hot weather it is important to take water along for your dog, to prevent over heating.
* Walk with your dog beside you, not in front of you. Allowing the dog to always be in the lead gives him the notion that he is the pack leader.
* Always keep slack on the lead. Every time you pull the dog back you just encourage him to pull in the opposite direction. Rather stop, wait for the dog to calm down, then continue.
* Own the walk. You decide where you go, when you stop, and whether the dog is allowed to mark, or sniff around.
* Where possible, avoid other dogs. You have no idea of another dog’s temperament and matters can quickly get out of hand. If your dog is small, pick him up if a big dog approaches aggressively, if you have a big dog just walk in a different direction and avoid a confrontation.
You also don’t know if a strange dog has been vaccinated and if it is carrying any diseases that may be passed to your dog.
* Choose a collar and leash (or a harness) that is comfortable for your dog, but that also gives you complete control over the dog. Also make sure that your dog is wearing an id tag, just in case he gets away from you.
In the unlikely even that the dog does escape, the id tag will identify you as the owner and hopefully see the dog returned safely to you. You may also want to have your dog micro-chipped for extra peace of mind.
* Finally, have fun! Walking your dog can be a really fun activity if you approach it in the right way. It’s one of the best ways of bonding with your dog, it’s an excellent work out for both of you, and your dog will be calmer and more obedient. All of that for just an hour of your time a day.
